Good Shepherd
Ceiling of the Tomb
Originally uploaded by gashwin
The readings this Sunday are from the 10th chapter of the Gospel of John, where Our Lord talks about the Good Shepherd.
This rather dim and blurry photograph is of a mosaic at the back of the Tomb of Galla Placidia, taken by yours truly in Ravenna last month, which dates from the early 5th century. The mosaic represents a young, beardless Jesus as the Good Shepherd and is, if I recall correctly, one of the earliest known representations of this scene in Christian art.
[A much better photo of the mosaic.]
