The Tomb of St. Paul

The tomb of Saint Paul! The marble sarcophagus can be seen behind the iron grill of the Confessio.

View down the nave of the Basilica to the triumphal arch.

The tomb has been excavated, and the old Confessio underneath the main altar now has a glass plate so that one can see the actual Constantinian marble sarcophagus enclosing the tomb of the Apostle!

I got to St. Paul Outside the Walls yesterday morning -- I was going to meet Mike Aquilina there -- but first, I ended up praying at the tomb. This is my first visit since after the excavations. That was really powerful: a visit to the St. Paul's tomb is a must on every trip to Rome, but this time it was even more special.

Sancte Paule, ora pro nobis! Da nobis zelum animarum!
