Has the Archbishop gone bonkers?

God bless Ruth Gledhill! That's the title of her post looking at the proposal by the Archbishop of Canterbury advocating for the adoption of Sharia in Britain!

I think it's pretty clear that the media have gone bonkers with this themselves.

Not entirely, I don't think. In this one very restricted instance I'm all with The Sun. Abp Williams has clearly not been keeping in touch with Canada since Michael Peers retired as Anglican Primate there. Ontario toyed with this very idea a few years back on the basis that Catholics and Jews had recourse to such tribunals. It was resoundingly denounced by Muslim women who not unnaturally suggested that they hadn't immigrated to the West in order to attorn to Sharia. The upshot was that the Ontario Crown abolished the Catholic and Jewish tribunals too. There were in the circumstances no complaints.

I think he's just looking for some way out of his current difficulties. Think about it: the Americans name a gay bishop; the archbishop immediately transfers the guy to a city where Sharia is operative. Problem solved. Anglican unity achieved.
