Sir Edmund Hillary RIP

Growing up, at one stage I had this fascination with mountains (and took bizarre pride that the world's tallest was, well, not quite in India, but astride the border between Nepal and China, close enough to be "ours."). The story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's conquest of Everest held endless fascination. And I always remember my father's tale of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (he was studying at LSE during that time) and the headline that screamed, "All this and Everest too!"

Sir Edmund Hillary has climbed the final mountain now. News Blog - Times Online - WBLG: Even Everest is in shadow today Do check out the first two links in the story, to a pdf of the page from the Times back in 1953 and the second one to a brief video explaining the Times role in the expedition and how the story broke.

RIP.
