As I understand it, the folks at Palna also enforce another rule that is a bit counter-cultural: the first child any prospective couple adopts must be a girl. Attitudes towards adoption remain rather negative in India, but thanks in some part to places like this, things are changing. [However, as this story from the Hindu from two years ago shows, other attitudes are still deeply ingrained.]
