O brother where art thou?

Three seminarians walk into a bar ...

No, not the start of a bad joke. Three of us went out to Arlington to a neat bar that was screening the absolutely brilliant Coen brothers film, O Brother Where Art Thou. Kinda like a comedy club ... drinks and food available. It's a fantastic movie. Absolutely brilliant! I think it's up there in my top 10 or 20 for sure.

A fun evening, and nice to be out in a "normal" setting for a change. Thanks for organizing this, Tom!

Had you not seen O Brother before? I agree, it is a fabulous film. The cast is perfect, and the comic timing brilliant. Some of it was filmed in my hometown of Vicksburg, MS. This summer there was an exhibit in which a running loop of the movie's final "concert" footage of the Soggy Bottom Boys played, and there's a moment when Clooney gets this look on his face and I laughed EVERY TIME it played. Mind you, this was a continual loop. So that one particualr scene held up in quality for me, like, 15 times in a row. I couldn't stop watching it.

O Brother has one of the best authentic, roots music sound tracks of all time. Not that I'm biased. Glad you enjoyed the movie.

I never had seen it! Tom burned a CD of the soundtrack already, and it's in my iTunes now. My favorites are Down by the River, and the songs the Sirens sing. The solo "Death" is simply fantastic.

Down by the River just brings the South alive for me!

Our previous church used it (Down to the River) as a communion song, sung while people processed forward for communion by intinction. It can be pretty powerful.

Palph Stanley, hisownself, will be back in Colatown on January 6. Izzy & I saw him a couple of years ago at Bill's Pickin' Parlor, where he sang O Death. We also saw him, and most of the rest of the folks from the Down From the Mountain Tour, in Raleigh in 2002. Between watching O Death while standing by my Dad (who had cancer) and joining 30,000 others in Angel Band, it was one powerful night of music.
