Baker installed in Birmigham: Charleston is officially vacant

Bishop Robert Baker was installed as the fourth Bishop of Birmingham earlier toady. A friend who had flown down for the installation called a few minutes back. It was a packed service, somewhat on the longer side (3h30m or so!), but quite beautiful, with a whole bunch of visiting prelates, including Cardinal Rigali from Philadelphia.

The Diocese of Charleston is now officially vacant. The College of Consultors will meet within the week to appoint an Administrator, unless the Holy Father appoints one instead.

Here's a recap of what happens when a Bishop leaves a See.
