Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo: RIP

(Got this link from Yahoo: Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, former Vatican envoy in Washington, dies at 76).

Here's the CNS story.
In June 1999, in his first address to a meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Colombian archbishop said that when Pope John Paul II asked him to go to the United States, he accepted the post "not without a certain sense of trepidation."

However, he said, he found himself "in the midst of a church full of vigor, rich in activity, ready to take initiative and looking for solutions to not a few problems which it must face."
Incidentally, I'd gotten to hear him speak and chatted with him a little bit ... it was at a Diocesan gathering (maybe a Coastal Catholic Conference, in 2000?), and he spoke to the Hispanic track. Very gracious. I remember I'd asked him how one responds to folks who say that they're spiritual but not religious. He said, if I recall correctly, well, you can't separate the Church from Christ. And, your life must reflect the Gospel.

Requiescat in Pace.
