Confession boxes ...

The "box" hasn't disappeared from Italy at all ... they are everywhere. Multiple numbers of them in the bigger churches, testimony to a time when regular celebration of the Sacrament was the norm. [I've even been to Mass in Italy where it someone went to Confession during Mass.]

Something about this kneeler sitting in front of a "box" in a side chapel (well, it's actually in front of the atlar, but from this angle ... ) in the lower crypt of the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi grabbed my attention ...

... there's something gritty about the sacrament. The grit and dirt of our lives meeting the grace of heaven.

It's Lent! Repent and believe ... Posted by Picasa
