China's European past ...

I recently met someone who's Polish-American, born in Rio de Janiero, while their family was migrating to America after fleeing China as the Communists came to power in 1949. Didn't really know much about this fascinating chapter in China's history. In this article in Prospect magazine, Robert Skidelsky, of Russian origin, gives a moving account of his journey back to his hometown in Harbin.

I used to know... Well, I suppose I still do, we just haven't talked in a couple years.

Lemme start over.

I know Jim Eisenbraun, of fantastic publisher of Near Eastern & Biblical books. He tells a marvelous familial story of his forebear's escape from China, west across the desert when the Communists came looking for those corrupt Westerners. If you ever bump into him (say, at an SBL conference), introduce yourself in my name anb buy him dinner; the story is well worth the price of admissiom.

That should read "...Eisenbraun, publisher of fantastic...."

That's what I get for commenting between stacks of papers.

Well, glad for the comment, regardless of whether you were in between a stack of papers, dishes, or household appliances :)
